Dear friends, I made some mistakes when I first start my flight training in USA, I had no clue about what school to chose. First I went to the big names. But one thing I did not know is the price they gave me in the beginning was different from the bills. Many schools have hidden fees such as fuel surcharges and briefings and debriefings fees. Then I went to less expensive schools but I flow cheap but unsafe airplanes and I almost got killed couple times. I had many dangerous
situations because the school wants to save money regardless of quality. Look at it this way, if I crash (God forbid) they have insurance that they will buy them new airplane instead of their old one.
My advice to you, get your private in a school that have a flat rate and will not charge you every time you ask you instructor a question. Then for your advance training you, study first on your own, get your written out the way then start going to school. This will save you 50% of ground school and instruction time as your instructor will teach you less as you will know more. Also you will have better idea about what is going on and you can correct the instructor when he makes mistakes. Trust me, they do!

Thank you so much for this advice . we know most flight schools have hidden fees .A friend of me from Libya was studying in Canda , he met the same problem. One night, they ask him to fly using an old airplane . after ten mintues of flying ) as he told me ( the engine stopped and he fall down in the field. He spent three weeks in the hospital after that he rejected by the school and return to Libya without any rights. Even when tried to return to Canda , they did not give him visa.

Oh I am so sorry to hear about what happen to your friend. I am glad that he is fine now. I suggest that your friend should get a copy of the FAA investigation and find out exactly the cause of the accident. It could be not his fault. If this is the case, He should sue the school for damages and get his record clean.
Your friend might was flying on lower power setting and he forgot to apply Carp. Heat which led to some icing. Or simply miscalculate the fuel or forgot to change fuel tanks. It could be any reasons. Still he is just a student. And his instructor should know better and not send some one who is not ready or may be did not teach him every thing he needs. My instructor got me soloed in the second day!
I succeeded but if time goes back I will never solo second day. I really hate bad instructors.
But I am really proud of your friend that he kept his cool and fly the airplane. He will be good a pilot. So many experienced pilot they panic when the engine quit and forgot the simple fact FLY THE AIRPLANE! So I am happy that he is ok. I still think he should sue the school no matter whose fault the accident is. He is entitled of some money for the injuries that he has. The school insurance policy will pay for that. He should get paid for his pain and suffering plus he should get his record clean. If it was me, I will contact the FAA immediately and request copy of the investigation. Tell him not to give up. He did well by gliding that airplane. In Sha Allah it will work out for him.
