A fare basis code may be made up of different alpha/numeric elements. Not all fare basis codes contain all elements.
The following elements may apply:

• Class code
• Seasonal code
• Day of the week code
• Time of the day code
• Fare and passenger type code
• Maximum stay
• Fare level identifier
• Miscellaneous code

Class Code
The first letter of a fare basis code is the class code. It indicates the class of service and the location in which the passenger will sit on the aircraft. The following codes apply:

Generally, there are two categories of fares:

• Normal fares
• Special fares

Normal Fares

Normal fares are flexible and therefore more expensive. Normal fares are available for all classes of travel. They may be divided into:
Full Normal Fares

General characteristics are:

• No advance purchase requirement
• No reservations, payment or ticketing restrictions
• No minimum stay restriction
• Maximum stay one year
• Changes permitted
• Refund permitted
• Unlimited transfers
• Unlimited stopovers

Example fare basis codes are: F, J, C1, Y, S.



Secondary Level Fares/Restricted Normal Fares

The general characteristics are the same as for full normal fares, except stopovers and transfers are restricted:

• No advance purchase requirement
• No reservations, payment or ticketing restrictions
• No minimum stay restriction
• Maximum stay one year
• Changes permitted
• Refund permitted
• Restricted transfers
• Stopovers not permitted or restricted in number

Example fare basis codes are: F2, J2, Y2.
Note: Most secondary level fares are filed by individual airlines.




Special Fares

Excursion Fares

The general characteristics are:

• No advance purchase requirement
• No reservations, payment or ticketing restrictions
• Minimum stay restrictions
• Maximum stay restrictions
• Changes permitted
• Refund permitted
• Transfers are permitted but usually restricted in number
• Stopovers not permitted but usually restricted in number

Example fare basis codes are: YEE3M, YHEE45.




PEX/SuperPEX Fares

The general characteristics are the same as for excursion fares, except for stopovers, transfers and reservations, payment and ticketing restrictions.

• No advance purchase requirement
• Restrictions exist for reservations, payment or ticketing
• Minimum stay restrictions
• Maximum stay restrictions
• Changes not permitted, or permitted at a charge
• Non-refundable, or refund restrictions apply
• Transfers are restricted
• Stopovers not usually permitted or are very restricted in number

Example fare basis codes are: YKPX3M, BJHPX, LSX1M.




APEX Fares
The general characteristics are the same as for PEX fares, except there is an advance purchase requirement. This is normally a set number of days prior to departure, by which time reservations payment and ticketing must be completed.

• Advance purchase requirement
• Restrictions exist for reservations, payment or ticketing
• Minimum stay restrictions
• Maximum stay restrictions
• Changes not permitted, or permitted at a charge
• Non-refundable, or refund restrictions apply
• Transfers are restricted
• Stopovers are generally not permitted or are very restricted in number

Example fare basis codes are: YHAP6M, MHAP.
