As President of Century Air, my background of over
50 years in aviation includes thousands of hours of flight experience. I am an FAA Designated Pilot
Examiner, retired American Airline Captain and FAAsTeam Representative (Promoting safety
through education). When I began learning to fly, there was an obvious deficiency in general aviation
flight training. Although learning to fly should be an educational experience, there were few flight
schools that treated it as such. For this purpose, in 1975 I founded Century Air, and have over the
years built the school into the educational facility and professional environment that flight training
should be. The philosophy of my organization is one of quality training as well as quality service,
something that is rarely found in general aviation even to this day.

Thank you for your interest in Century Air for your flight training.
All students must attend a consultation prior to course enrollment. Consultations may be scheduled
between the hours of 9AM-7PM seven days per week. International students and out-of-state students
may complete an initial enrollment before scheduling a consultation by filling out a Pilot Information
Form (enclosed). This form must be returned via facsimile for processing to (973) 575-4488 or by email
to [email protected]
Federal Regulations require that all flight training applicants present proof of U.S. Citizenship for enrollment
in a flight training program. Proof of Citizenship may be established by presentation of U.S. Passport
or original birth certificate and government issue picture identification.
Non-U.S. citizens will be required to register with the TSA at www.flightschoolcandidates.gov and follow
the guidelines to obtain approval prior to enrollment in a flight training course.
Students requiring a VISA to enter the US for training must complete an I-20 SEVIS application and
submit to Century Air with a $150 processing fee (application enclosed). Students must also schedule a
telephone consultation and interview prior to being approved for an I-20. To schedule a consultation,
contact Century Air, by phone or e-mail. Please allow 4-6 weeks for completion of the I-20 application
process prior to the class start date.

Professional Pilot Program
The Professional Pilot Program is specific for students interested in a career in aviation. The
courses included in the program are Private Pilot, Instrument/Commercial and Multi-Engine
Land.

OURSE OBJECTIVE

The student will obtain the knowledge, skill and aeronautical experience necessary to meet the
requirements for a Commercial Pilot Certificate (airplane category) with an Instrument Rating
and a Multi-engine land class rating.

TUDENT INFORMATION

Course Enrollment:
Century Air utilizes an open enrollment policy. You may begin flight
training as soon as the required minimum or full payment has been received and you have
completed the enrollment process. You must also purchase the necessary supplies for each
certificate or rating before commencement of each training program. Before you begin the
flight portion of your training, you must obtain at least a second class FAA Medical certificate.
A list of FAA medical examiners in your area will be provided to you.

Lesson Description and Stages of Training:
The courses included in this Professional Pilot
Program are Private Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot Certificate and
Multi-engine Rating. Century Air utilizes Jeppesen academic materials for all training
programs. You will receive a syllabus for each training course which fully describes the
objectives, standards and measurable stages of accomplishment and learning necessary to
complete the program.

Tests and Checks:
The syllabus incorporates stage checks in accordance with Federal
Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 141. These checks are given by the chief instructor or
designated assistant at the end of each stage. You will also complete the appropriate stage
written exams, oral briefings, and final examinations that are described within the syllabus.

Requirements for Solo Flight:
Before you can fly solo, you must be at least 16 years of age,
hold a student pilot certificate and at least an FAA class III medical certificate. You must also
have a non-owner renters insurance policy in force at the time of solo (information is supplied
to you during enrollment). Solo flight operations require specific training, successful
completion of a pre-solo written exam, and endorsements from your flight instructor.

Requirements for Graduation:
You must be at least seventeen years of age to obtain a
Private Pilot Certificate and at least eighteen years of age to obtain a Commercial Pilot
Certificate. You must hold at least a valid Class III medical certificate to obtain a Private Pilot
Certificate. You must be able to read, speak and write English and satisfactorily complete the
training outlined in each course syllabus to graduate from the Professional Pilot Program.

An applicant for the Private Pilot Certificate will be required by FAR Part 141 to complete a minimum
of 35 flight hours, including 20 hours of flight instruction, 15 hours of solo flight and 30 hours of dual
ground instruction. Additional training will be required to complete the course to achieve FAA
standards. The “Additional Average to Completion” has been established to show the average a
student can expect to complete for graduation of the course.

also entitles each student the unlimited use of special topic DVD’s and the King Private Pilot Written Exam Course
which is required for the successful completion of the Private Pilot FAA written exam.

PRIVATE PILOT COURSE SUPPLIES
An applicant for the Private Pilot Certificate will be required to obtain the following supplies before
beginning training. It is also recommended that students wear headsets during flight training. Telex and
Pilot headsets may be purchased from Century at a reduced rate for all students. Pilot kits are subject to
7% sales tax.

An applicant for the Instrument Rating will be required by FAR Part 141 to complete a minimum of 35
flight hours, including 21 hours of flight instruction - airplane and 14 hours of flight instruction -
simulator. An applicant for the Instrument Rating will complete 21.5 hours of dual ground instruction.

Simulator training will be conducted in the Frasca 242 And AST-300 Flight Simulators.

This course is based on the minimum 35 hour requirement as per FAR Part 141 Regulations. The additional average
to completion is 15 hours of dual flight instruction, however; most additional instruction time will be included as a
training segment of the Commercial Certification course (total 155 hours – Instrument /Commercial combined).

Instrument Rating Course
As per FAR Part 141, a Commercial Pilot Certification Course must consist of at least 120 hours of solo
flight and flight training. This flight time is made up of 20 hours of dual flight instruction - of which 10 must
be in a complex aircraft, and 85.5 hours of directed solo practice - of which 5 must be in a complex aircraft.
An applicant for this certificate will receive an average of 13 hours of ground instruction. This course also
includes the Multi-Engine Add-On rating within the Commercial training. The multi-engine training includes
14.5 flight hours, including 7.5 hours of flight instruction in a multi-engine airplane and 7 hours of flight
instruction in the Frasca simulator. An applicant for the Multi-engine Rating will complete 8 hours of
ground instruction.

Jeppesen Enroute/Approach Charts (Instrument Rating):
The Jeppesen Airway Manual is essential to instrument training as
well as to operating in the instrument environment for the lifetime of
your instrument rating. The subscription will be ordered for you
during flight training. It will include one initial East Express package,
one vinyl binder and the first year of revisions essential to flying
safely within the East sector (NY, NJ, PA). You may renew your
subscription with Jeppesen each year and you may expand your
coverage at any time.
Instrument/Commercial and Multi-Engine Course Supplies:
An applicant for the Commercial Certificate with Instrument and Multi-engine ratings will be required to
obtain the following supplies for training. All items will be purchased at enrollment with the exception of the
Instrument Jeppesen charts which will be purchased at the appropriate time during the course of training.

Professional Pilot Program:
At completion of the training, a student will have achieved an average total of 218 training
hours (90.5 solo and 127.5 flight instruction). The applicant will obtain an additional average
of 8.0 hours of solo flight time during the FAA Practical Testing. Upon successful completion
of the Professional Pilot Program, the applicant will hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate,
single and multi-engine land with an instrument rating.

All hours listed for the Private, Instrument and Commercial Courses are based on FAA minimums, as
per Part 141 of the Federal Aviation Regulations, with the additional training average for the Private
Pilot course. The hours listed for the Multi-engine Rating Course are based on student averages for
course completion.
The hours listed should be sufficient for completion of all training, however; if additional training is
required to meet the practical testing standards and achieve proficiency, it will be charged at current
hourly rates. Prices are subject to change when necessary.
On occasion, a fuel surcharge may be imposed on flight time when the price of fuel exceeds the
amount allotted in the cost of the aircraft per hour. When a fuel surcharge is applied, a notice is issued
and the amount is added to each flight invoice following the flight.

There are two types of flight training schools,
Part 61 and Part 141, which refers to the Federal
Aviation Regulations (FAR's) under which they
operate. The most common and least important
distinction between them is the minimum flight time
required for the private certificate - 40 hours under
Part 61 and 35 hours under Part 141. Considering
that the national average for earning a private
certificate is 60 to 75 hours (how long you'll take
will depend on your ability and flying frequency),
this difference is minimal. It does, however; make a
big difference to commercial pilot applicants: Part
61 requires 250 hours and Part 141 requires 190.
What differentiates the two is structure and
accountability. Part 141 schools, which are
periodically audited by the FAA, must have detailed,
FAA-approved course outlines and meet
student performance rates. They must also
meet and maintain other operational
requirements. These include a qualified chief
flight instructor who's subject to FAA review,
FAA-approved stage check pilots, a qualified
aircraft dispatcher, detailed ground training
with approved testing procedures, appropriate
training facilities, records, equipment, and
maintenance services.
Part 141 schools follow their curricula to
the letter, teach certain skills in a given order,
use senior instructors to check progress at
specific intervals and keep detailed records of
each students progress. This has its benefits
for both full and part time students. The
training quality is known, and if you seek additional
training, or return from a break in training, these
records will allow you to pick up where you left off
with minimal delay.
Part 61 schools, which are not subject to the
same FAA scrutiny given to Part 141 schools, have
the flexibility to rearrange lesson content and
sequence, which may not be of benefit to the student.
When you're looking for a flight training facility,
Part 141 schools are your best choice. And even
though it's an approved school, that doesn't mean it
can't also train students under Part 61. Many do,
thus letting them enjoy the approved structure and
accountability of the school under the more flexible
regulation.
