On October 3rd, at 11:00 AM MDT, a Cessna 172D (registration N2593) was damaged during a loss of control while performing a forced landing a half-mile east of Animas Airpark (00C) in Durango, Colorado. The occupants of the aircraft, Brian and Lisa Price, both suffered minor injuries in the accident. On October 7th, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued its preliminary report on the accident which offers a small summary of the events.

According to the report, the airplane was departing 00C on its way to Page Municipal Airport (PGA) in Page, Arizona. Animas Airpark is a small airport located south of Durango. The Animas River meanders around the east of the airport from north to south. As the pilot was departing runway 19 and the aircraft had climbed to about 200 feet, the engine lost power. The pilot pushed the nose down and apparently attempted to land at a field near the airport. The field was cluttered with bushes, trees, and large rocks. The pilot lost control of the aircraft during the emergency landing, coming to rest with the tail up in the air and damage to most of the aircraft. The field is closer to the Animas River, east-southeast of the airpark.
